Retail Advice

What comes to mind when you think about adding retail items to your shop? You don’t always have think in terms of toys, apparel or big ticket items like cages, crates and furniture.

One alternative approach can be to stock the basic products that your customers need to treat common pet problems.

In her article, "A Winning Combination," nationally-known grooming shop owner and retail expert Missi Salzberg explains how groomers all too often lose out on easy profits when they don’t offer pet basics for retail.

Salzberg explains that when groomers work on the same pets on a regular basis, they are in an excellent position to notice changes in a pet’s appearance or behavior. Often they are the first person to alert a pet owner of a potential problem.

But while groomers might be good at identifying problems and suggesting solutions, Salzberg writes, they often don’t carry the products that customers need to treat their pets.

Sazlberg argues that it makes no business sense for groomers to send their customers somewhere else to get ear powder, flea and tick treatments or nutritional supplements when they could offer those items in their shop and make an easy sale.
