Five Quick & Easy Tips for Preventing Rust on Shears & Clipper Blades

1. A Few Drops of Oil A Day. Be sure to clean all blades and shears at the end of each day. Thoroughly remove all hair, wipe off any excess moisture, and add one or two drops of oil. Make this a standard part of your cleanup routine, and you'll enjoy longer blade life and better performance. 
2. Keep Styptic Powder Away. Styptic power might be great for stopping cuts from bleeding, but its corrosive properties will make metal rust like crazy. Keep it clear of your blades and shears.
3. Give Them a Short-Term Soaking. If you use a disinfectant like Barbicide®, don't soak your shears for more than 10 minutes at a time. That's enough time to thoroughly disinfect the blades without harming the metal. Soaking them overnight will not make the blades any cleaner, but it could weaken the metal and make it more susceptible to rust.
4. Let Them Breathe. Don't store shears in the plastic sleeves that they're shipped in. Plastic doesn't breathe, so any moisture that gets trapped inside the sleeve with the shears is likely to do some damage. Your best bet is to leave your shears exposed to open air, or to store them in a case made of breathable material such as leather. If you must store your shears in an airtight container, throw in a desiccant pack to absorb any excess moisture. 
5. Wrap Them Up. If there are a few speciality clipper blade sizes that you like to have on hand in the shop but don't use every day, here's a handy trick to keep them free of rust. Take a thick brown paper grocery bag, cut out a 6" x 6" square, brush the paper with oil, then wrap the blade in the paper. Now you have a breathable, self-lubricating storage case!
