Maintaining a Professional Image

How Dog Groomers Can Maintain a Strong Professional Image

Your professional image is how you present yourself at work as well as in social or social media outlets that might spill over into your work. A pet groomer's professional image may differ from that of a CEO of, for instance, a tech company. Because of the nature of our work (think water and fur) and because our industry allows a certain amount of artistic and creative leeway. I know many successful groomers who pull off extreme professionalism while rocking primary-colored hair and lots of visible tattoos.

Be aware of first impressions. By keeping a few things in mind, you can look professional while maintaining your own sense of style.

  • Dress in a way that is appropriate for the way groomers work. This means hair-repellent clothes. There are so many choices available to choose from; you should be able to find something that looks and feels right for you.
  • Those clothes need to fit you appropriately and be well-maintained. I used to work with a groomer who wore her grooming tops several sizes too small, and they were often torn and frayed. It was a cringe-worthy look. Grooming attire may not be what anyone would consider "high fashion," but it looks so much better when it fits well and is in good repair.
  • Maintain good personal hygiene. I know, I know, by the end of the day, we are often frosted in the undercoat we blew out of a Samoyed but start the day clean and hair-free.
Professional images go beyond physical appearance, including how we communicate with customers and coworkers. Keep your communications respectful, clear, and concise, including both spoken and written communication.

Your work ethic and behavior at work also contribute to maintaining a professional image. Being reliable and punctual, as well as having a professional and positive attitude, are key.

Consider who your audience is if you use social media in conjunction with your work. One groomer I know obviously dislikes all dogs that fall into the "doodle" category. She makes this well-known on her business social media even though this group of mixed breeds makes up a large percentage of the local pet population.

Creating the professional image you wish to portray takes some thought and effort. Still, it will pay off by building credibility, enhancing your relationships with customers and coworkers,  contributing to a positive workplace, and building your reputation.
