From Goldendoodles and Labradoodles to Aussiedoodles, Bernedoodles, and every imaginable Poodle hybrid, the Doodle craze shows no signs of slowing. According to Google Trends, searches for “Doodle grooming” have more than doubled in the past five years. And while they may be a point of professional friction, Doodles also represent a remarkable opportunity for our industry. The Mixed-Bag Breed That Keeps on Growing There’s little consistency in the Doodle category beyond their Poodle ancestry. Thanks to the range of sizes in Poodles themselves (toy, miniature, standard), Doodles now come in small, medium, and large forms—each with varying coat textures, densities, and personalities. This unpredictability can be daunting for groomers, but let’s consider the upside. Unlike the majority of the AKC’s Top 10 Most Popular Breeds—many of which are short-coated and require minimal grooming—Doodles typically demand consistent, professional coat care. Beyond the ever-steady Poodle and Yorkie, most popular dogs (Labradors, Frenchies, Bulldogs, and Beagles) rarely see the inside of a grooming salon. Doodles, by contrast, bring in reliable, repeat business. Their coat types, which can range from wooly and curly to wavy or wiry, require professional grooming every 4 to 6 weeks to maintain hygiene, comfort, and appearance. A Profession’s Love-Hate Relationship Let’s be honest: the word “Doodle” often elicits groans in grooming circles. Much of the frustration stems from inconsistent breeding standards and a lack of honest client education from breeders. We decided to start filming dog grooming instructional videos after recognizing the grow- ing demand for knowledge in pet care and the crucial role it plays in maintaining a pet’s health and well-being. Whether you're a professional groomer, a home groomer, or simply a pet owner, understanding proper grooming tech- niques and equipment is essential. Our goal is to support the long-term health and happiness of every dog and cat. Was it difficult to start filming dog grooming videos? Yes, very much so. YouTube was something neither of us had ever done before, so adding the extra element of filming and learning how to properly structure and edit tutorial videos was intimidating. Despite the challenges, it was also exciting and fun. As a father and son team, we feed off each other’s energy, which helped us push through the learning curve and made the process more enjoyable, even during the tough moments. What are the challenges of creating videos & podcasts? Filming live animals adds an extra layer of complexity. While we're focused on teaching and demonstrating the many intricate aspects of dog grooming—and capturing quality footage at the same time—we must also prioritize the dog’s safety and comfort throughout the process. And that’s just the beginning, before any editing or post- production even starts. One video can take weeks, sometimes even months, to complete. Coming up with ideas that people both want and need to see is another ma- jor challenge. As both YouTubers and professional groomers, we have to anticipate which topics viewers struggle with most—like nail clipping, ear cleaning, or sanitary trims—and make those a priority. On top of all that, the finished groom needs to look good. If the dog doesn’t come out looking clean, stylish, and well-groomed, people won’t trust the tutorial, no matter how informative it is. Then there’s the audience response side: answer- ing the flood of comments and questions from viewers who need extra help can feel like a full- time job on its own. That’s one of the reasons we started our podcast—it gave us a platform to speak more in-depth about grooming challenges without the pressure of having a dog on the table. It allows us to give clearer, more thoughtful answers and connect with our audience in a different way. How do you balance running a salon & creating content? It’s definitely challenging—we not only have to satisfy our grooming clients but also en- gage our online audience. We need to know our appointment schedule inside and out so we can plan ahead: which dogs are coming in, what we can film, and how we can best showcase the grooming process. In many ways, we’re micromanaging and running multiple businesses within one. There’s very little downtime—and honestly, we prefer it that way. As professional dog groomers and content creators, building momentum fuels creativity —not just for the grooms themselves, but also for the videos and podcast. Stopping means starting over. Staying in a consistent flow with both the business and the content helps us maintain a creative, productive, and artistic environ- ment. What motivates you both? Being part of anything that helps animals will always be a driving force for us. We're not only father and son, but also best friends, so we’re incredibly fortunate to share the same passion for dog groom- ing. We truly appreciate being part of this unique and rapidly growing industry. We love attending pet expos and conven- tions where we can both teach and learn from like-minded, skilled professionals. Being surrounded by such amazing people and pets brings out the love and care that define this profession. Sometimes, that’s the only motivation you need. What advice do you have for groomers? Learn proper grooming techniques from skilled groomers, and if possible, attend a reputable grooming school. Had I not en- rolled at Nash Academy of Animal Arts and been mentored by their incredible staff and instructors back in 1986, I can honestly say I wouldn’t be where I am today—still working as a professional groomer and answering this question all these years later. Grooming can be a long-term career, but that means planning ahead—both person- ally and financially—is key. Pacing yourself in this business will work to your benefit. At some point, it’s inevitable that you’ll experi- ence groomer burnout. Learning how to work through the emotions that come with it is crucial for maintaining longevity and protecting your well-being in such a physi- cally and mentally demanding profession. As you grow older in this industry, your experience increases—but so do the physical challenges. Ultimately, maintaining both your physical and mental health is what this job demands from you. Most groomers will tell you: it’s not as easy or fun as it may look. If you’re not willing to give it 100%, it may not be the right path for you. Educate yourself. Learn from skilled profes- sionals.
